Useful and Useless News On A Slow Hump Day

In football news, if you can really call it that, according to Micah Johnson’s Facebook status, which is always a good source of information, he will be returning to Lexington for his senior year after his draft potential was expected to be between the 3rd and 5th rounds.  Also in the update, Micah plans to make more history next year by being the best linebacker in the country and get the Cats into a BCS bowl.  You have to like that kind of confidence, now can he deliver.  So far, these players have been like UPS, delivering everything they said they would.  Bring on the BCS, Micah!

Woah Pig Suey!  For those who missed it and didnt see Kenny’s post, Arkansas beat their second top 10 ten in a week last night.  The Hogs beat #7 Texas 67-61 last night in Fayetteville at what seemed like a UK reunion of sorts.  Of course, former Cat John Pelphrey is the Hogs head coach (no matter how many times I see it, I cannot get used to him wearing red).  Also in attendance was former Kentucky coach Eddie Sutton, his wife Patsy, and son Sean, who was fired from Oklahoma State last year and replaced by Travis Ford.  Jimmy Dykes, who was an assistant under Sutton at UK, was part of the broadcast team for the game.  Plus, three of Arkansas’ top 6 players, Courtney Fortson, Rotnei Clarke, and Michael Sanchez, were recruited heavily by Kentucky.   Last week, the Hogs knocked off then number 4 ranked Oklahoma.  Their record is now 12-1, and I look for them to enter the top-25 next week.  Its looking more and more like the road to the SEC West and perhaps conference championship may be going through Fayetteville this year.

Maybe the SEC isn’t as weak as everyone seems to think.  I love what Coach Gillespie said about the SEC Monday on his radio show.  Coach was asked about the SEC being down this year and how he thought that would affect the conference season.  His reply was that unlike some conferences who flaunt and advertise how strong their conference is this year, the SEC will prove it’s worth with it’s play during the rest of the season.  I’m no rocket scientist but it sure seemed like he was taking a shot at the mighty Big East, which has been billed as the best conference in the history of the world this season by everyone in the media.

Thanks to the Tulsa drubbing of Ball State last night in a monsoon in Mobile, I am this year’s winner of the UKWC Bowl Pick Challenge.  I am not sure there is any prize but I guess I will get an atta boy or something.  I want to take this opportunity to thank myself for making such great picks and also say thanks to Seth and Kenny for not.  Just kidding guys, I only won by one game.  It was fun though.

In the “Who Cares” section of this post and in case you missed it, the UL team plane had an engine fire shortly after takeoff yesterday and had to turn around and make an emergency landing.  You may ask yourself why I am writing this on a UK blog.  Its a good question and the answer is to warn UK fans in the Louisville area of the next excuse for why the Cards will lose in Tampa to South Florida tonight.  When they lost to Minnesota in Phoenix earlier in the season, the excuse was they flew into a headwind during the trip out there and it made the trip longer than normal.   Not because Minnesota was a good team, not because they played like crap, because of a plane ride they had a day and a half before.  Now you can start working on comebacks for your UL fan coworkers tomorrow when they rationalize the loss to USF.

Finally, is there anyone else hoping that Dick Vitale gets lost while doing the NBA game tonight and cannot find his way out of Denver after the game?  I have never seen so much publicity for a game based on who is announcing it before.  Maybe an avalanche will hit Denver, block every road out of town and he will be stuck there for the rest of the season.  I am dying to see the three NBA guys fit in to the booth at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  The booth is up in the rafters, not on the floor and is real small.  Mark Jackson and Mike Tirico are not small guys and adding Jeff Van Gundy in there will cramp the spaces even more.  It should be interesting to say the least.
